David Smith R.E. 1972
I thought I'd start A blog about Lowestoft as our move there is a new chapter in our lives and I’d like to keep an on-line record of it. Many friends and indeed family have questioned our decision to swap Brighton for Lowestoft and it remains to be seen if we have made a “good” move or one that we may live to regret. Only time and perhaps this blog will tell. It is a journey that we have set out on and you are most welcome to join us on it. I will add to this as and when time permits and my moods allow.
One of the first images that stuck in my mind whilst house hunting in Lowestoft was of the numerous washing lines that adorn the hundreds of back alleys that the town possesses. I found them bizarre but strangely fascinating and think of them of them as masts from fishing boats, or tall sailing ships. They are evocative and have a certain beauty perhaps only in the eye of myself, the beholder. I was thus surprised whilst on a recent visit to Lowestoft museum, about which more later, to come upon this etching by artist David Smith. As such one of my first projects is to research him and his works, he appears to be an artist of some international repute who was born and educated in Lowestoft. We shall discover his works together and perhaps dig up some unknown master pieces. I shall return to the subject of Lowestoft laundry in due course…….

Glad you started this, Paul. I don't think you have made a mistake choosing Lowestoft, by the way.
ReplyDeleteI have always been fascinated by clothes lines too, and NOT what I'm sure you're thinking, because of what naughty things they may contain!
Maybe I'd be better using thus blog for our travel blog?? Will be interested to see how you get on with it.
